Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
This airport was opened in an abandoned nine- hole of a golf field on May 1, 1929. It was later officially opened by the United States Navy at the beginning of the world war two. After commissioning, it was renamed as Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale. It was used mainly by civil airliners for military services. Since then the airline has been developing to become they way it is today.
The airport lies in a big piece of land covering five hundred fifty eight hectares. It has two runways.
The expansion of the airport started in 2003. This includes the enlargement of runway 10R/28L. It also had a modification of taxiway system. This will help in increasing speed and improve inter-terminal passenger movement. The upgrading was also done for the second time on April 25, 2006. And on June 5, 2007, the commissioners also voted for the expansion of the same runway to eight thousand feet. It has four terminals now and fifty seven gates. By the end of its expansion, the terminal is expected to have ninety seven of them. In addition, it is expected to handle thirty six million passengers.
It has so many destinations for the passengers and cargo. The international flight that departs from terminal 1, terminal 2, and 3 are denoted by the asterick, and when passengers arrive in another terminal apart from terminal four, they are carried by bus to the customs facility.
There have occurred several accidents since it started its operation. And the latest one happened this year where five persons died , and nine were injured.In conclusion, this airport is good condition, and it is advisable to use it.
